Moon phase watch excites the imagination

With its dreamy white mother-of-pearl canvas set alight with twinkling stars, Harry Winston’s new Midnight Date Moon Phase Automatic 36 mm for ladies is destined to exert a strong gravitational pull on one’s imagination.

Moon Phase complications are considered the most poetic and romantic of complications reminding us of the cyclical nature of time and the bewitching beauty of the moon, and Harry Winston’s Midnight Date Moon Phase model displays the different faces of the moon as it orbits the earth over 29.5 days in a crescent-shaped aperture on the dial.

Floating in a midnight blue sky, the gold moon completes its course from new moon to full moon thanks to a sophisticated complication developed especially for this 36-mm timepiece.

The moon phase aperture is, in turn, suspended by pearly white clouds recreated by the iridescent mother-of-pearl used to embellish the dial. Positioned in the northern hemisphere of the dial, the hours and minutes counter glows with a halo of 43 brilliant-cut diamonds and features three larger diamonds as hour markers and the hallmark Harry Winston logo at 12 o’clock. Like two celestial bodies orbiting serenely in space, the date counter gently intersects the hours and minutes ring. To enhance legibility, the circumference of the date disk is highlighted and inscribed with numbers for the uneven days and gold dots for the even days of the month.  And since Harry Winston is all about diamonds, a bright white diamond punctuates the name of the brand arching gracefully between 9 and 11 o’clock.

Harry Winston’s Midnight timepiece collection was conceived in 2008 to celebrate the art of traditional watchmaking with an emphasis on classic round cases and refined mechanical automatic movements.

The 36-mm case of the Midnight Date Moon Phase timepiece – available in 18-carat rose or white gold - is the perfect frame for this work of art and glows with the light of 83 brilliant-cut diamonds set on the bezel and lugs. Like bright stars twinkling in the night sky, the three diamonds set near the crown are larger in size and evoke the arched doorway of Harry Winston’s flagship New York boutique on Fifth Avenue.

A BEAUTIFUL MOVEMENT

The movement for this timepiece is a miniaturized version of the 42-mm Midnight Date Moon Phase and is the ideal female counterpart of the men’s timepiece. The mechanical automatic movement, which animates the moon phases, the date complication and the hours and minutes is equipped with a silicon balance spring beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour. The advantages of using silicon in the balance spring are numerous: lighter than metal, impervious to magnetic fields and corrosion, shock-resilient, flexible and less prone to deformation.

This avant-garde material will ensure years and years of impeccable service and optimize the overall isochronism of the movement.

Visible through the sapphire crystal case back, the movement and the gold rotor are hand-finished and decorated with circular Côtes de Genève motifs. With a power reserve of 68 hours, the time and date are set on the crown and the moon phases can be adjusted with a corrector hidden on the case at 8 o’clock. Presented on a white alligator leather strap with a pearly finishing matching with the mother of pearl dial, the 18-carat white or rose gold ardillon buckle secures the timepiece safely on the wrist.
