Lufthansa Technik has equipped an impressive fourth VIP aircraft with the fastest available internet connection at its facilities in Hamburg, Germany.
In addition to two Boeing 737-VIP and an Airbus A340-VIP, the owner of an A330-VIP is now one of the first private customers in the world to be able to use the new Ka-band broadband internet solution.
The experts in the VIP & Special Mission Aircraft Services business unit are currently installing this technology in yet another A340, and more completion contracts for VIP aircraft are currently in the acquisition stage.
The integration and approval of what is presently the fastest internet connection on board has become routine for the experts at Lufthansa Technik. The latest aircraft was even returned to the customer two days ahead of schedule.
"The fact that we are integrating the Ka-band so smoothly at this stage shows us that the wealth of experience we have accumulated and the wide range of types covered has made us the preferred contact partner on the market for an integration solution for the fastest connectivity system," says Thomas Decher, Vice President VIP Maintenance & Modifications. "This expertise increases our attractiveness to customers for VIP modifications at the Hamburg location."
Thanks to its longstanding expertise in the area of aircraft modification, Lufthansa Technik can integrate all systems and components in aircraft. In addition to the physical installation, this includes all required aeronautical and regulatory work, conversion planning and materials supply, the manufacture of diverse high-end components such as the WLAN access point, the supply of materials in regular flight operation, and the repair of defective components. The vast experience that Lufthansa Technik can now offer in the area of connectivity means shorter waiting times for customers in addition to other advantages.
Moreover, Lufthansa Technik is currently equipping the Lufthansa Group's Airbus A320 family with the latest Ka-band satellite technology. 32 aircraft per month are currently being upgraded, and this figure will rise to well over 200 aircraft by spring 2018.
Lufthansa Technik meanwhile holds Supplement Type Certificates (STCs) for system installation for the Airbus A320 family, the Airbus A330, the Airbus A340 and the Boeing 737 family. In addition, Lufthansa Technik holds a STC for all Boeing Business Jets BBJ1 (737-700) and BBJ2 (737-800) for its proprietary development, the TIOS (Two-In-One-Solution) antenna radome, which likewise enables the use of Ka-band and thus optimum high-speed Internet and TV connections on board.
