The Swatch Group has unveiled what is claimed to be the world’s smallest Bluetooth chip with exceptional features unrivalled by any existing product.
Measuring just 5 sq mm, new integrated circuit was designed by EM Microelectronic, Swatch Group’s R & D and the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM).
The ultra-miniaturisation of electronic components is seen as crucial for the densification of functions in portable electronic devices and the Internet of Things (IoT).
The Swatch Group says the chip has the lowest energy consumption compared to its competitors while its high-speed start-up capability is “unparalleled”.
The chip meets the latest Bluetooth standard, version 5.0 and its prowess is masterful because with more than 5 million transistors on a surface of about 5 sq mm.
Designed for maximum flexibility, it can work alone or in conjunction with various sensors.
Swatch Group and CSEM are working to develop a Swiss-made ecosystem that is designed to meet the needs of small connected objects (the IoT) and, of course, watches.
This platform will be built around a completely new, bespoke operating system.
