Spanish designer Jaime Hayon has unveiled his latest artwork - a fairground carousel adorned with black and white Swarovski crystals - which has been installed at the Swarovski Kristallwelten (Swarovski Crystal Worlds), the crystal manufacturer's theme park museum in the Tyrol mountains.
The monochrome design shimmers with 15 million Swarovski crystals across 12 ceiling panels and 16 wall panels and is illuminated with warm lighting to create a dreamlike atmosphere. Hayon was inspired by folklore and fairy tales to create the fantasy characters for the seats. Whimsical faces decorate the roof and the surrounding fence, expressing the joy, surprise and delight that riding a carousel brings.
The 'Carousel' – like most of Hayon’s work – showcases a characteristic contrast beautified by an exceptional sense of detail.
“The carousel is a symbol of innocence and lightness of spirit. In this exciting, new interpretation, Hayon combines superb elegance with his unique character figures from a fantasy world,” said Carla Rumler, curator for Swarovski Crystal Worlds and cultural director Swarovski.
Carousel joins other family-oriented installations at the theme park including André Heller’s ‘Labyrinth’, a four-storey high play tower and an outdoor playground.
Swarovski Crystal Worlds is open year-round for all visitors. With this new carousel and the many other enthralling instalments that captivate people of all ages, Crystal Worlds establishes itself as a leading attraction for both art enthusiasts and families.
