The EQS elevates the all-electric top-of-the-range model to a new dimension in aesthetics and luxury, while being produced on a completely carbon-neutral basis
Mercedes-EQ is redefining the all-electric luxury sedan vehicle segment with the new EQS, launched in mid-April, says the company.
The EQS is also the first model to be based on the modular architecture for luxury and executive-class electric vehicles, says the car-maker. Fusing technology, design, functionality and connectivity, the EQS delights both drivers and passengers.
The vehicle sets a new aerodynamic benchmark for production vehicles and supported by artificial intelligence (AI), it makes drivers’ everyday lives easier in many areas.
The EQS is produced together with the S-Class and the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class on a completely carbon-neutral basis in “Factory 56” at the Sindelfingen plant in Germany, Mercedes-Benz’s most modern automotive production facility. The battery systems are produced at the nearby Mercedes-Benz Untertürkheim location in the Hedelfingen plant. The EQS will be launched in Europe this August.
The EQS can be experienced with almost all the senses. This elevates the all-electric top-of-the-range model to a new dimension in aesthetics and luxury. At the same time, the EQS testifies to the passionate commitment of its developers and designers to electric mobility.
This ‘Digital Deep Dive Design’ presents many innovations, including:
• Aerodynamics - A world record being the first production car in the world with a Cd value starting from 0.20. This provides customers a greater range.
• Energising nature - New energising comfort programmes offer soothing sounds.
• HEPA filter - Elaborate filter system cleans the incoming outside air at its very high filtration level.
• MBUX Hyperscreen - The entire instrument panel is the ultimate widescreen.
• Sound experiences - Various soundscapes, including optional driving sound in the interior.
• Zero-layer concept - The key applications pertaining to the situation and context at the top MBUX level in the field of vision.
“At Mercedes, we are striving for nothing less than leadership in the field of electric mobility and digitisation through an intelligent platform strategy and a software-based approach. The new EQS shows we are following our own Mercedes path by offering customers a highly efficient, electric and luxurious experience with our electric vehicles,” said Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and COO of Mercedes-Benz Cars.
The first models on the market will be the EQS 450+ with 245 kW (electrical consumption NEDC combined: 19.1-16.0 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions: 0 g/km) and the EQS 580 4MATIC with 385 kW (electrical consumption NEDC combined: 20.0-16.9 kWh/100 km; CO2-emissions: 0 g/km).
As part of its Ambition 2039 initiative, Mercedes-Benz is working on offering a carbon-neutral new car fleet within 20 years from now. By as early as 2030, the company wants more than half the cars it sells to feature electric drive systems – this includes fully electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.
With ranges up to 770 km (WLTP – Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure) and an output of up to 385 kW, the powertrain of the EQS also meets every expectation of a progressive sedan in the S-Class segment. A performance version with up to 560 kW is being planned. All EQS models have an electric powertrain (eATS) at the rear axle, while the versions with 4MATIC also have an eATS at the front axle, the company said.
The EQS marks the launch of a new generation of batteries with significantly higher energy density. The larger of the two batteries has a usable energy content of 107.8 kWh. That is around 26 per cent more than the EQC (EQC 400 4MATIC: combined electrical consumption: 21.5-20.1 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions: 0 g/km). The automaker did not release pricing for the EQS, however industry experts expect it to easily top $100,000.
