Spring / Summer 2021
Harry Winston, known for fine jewellery and high-end watchmaking, celebrates the Year of the Ox with a captivating rose gold timepiece from the Premier collection.
Emblazoned with the powerful figure of an ox dominating a vivid red mother-of-pearl landscape, the dial sparkles with the radiance of Harry Winston diamonds.
The ox is the second of the 12 animals represented in the Chinese zodiac. Among the five elements associated with the ox, the year 2021 corresponds to the Metal Ox. A hardworking, noble draft animal, the ox is highly valued in Chinese culture. People born under the sign of the ox are said to be diligent, dependable, and honest.
The Premier Chinese New Year Ox is a limited edition of just eight pieces. In Chinese tradition, the number eight is the luckiest of all numbers. Another allusion to China’s rich cultural traditions is the combination of red and gold, symbolising immense good fortune and prosperity.
With its left hoof in mid-air and its tail swaying in motion as it charges across the red landscape, the ox is portrayed with striking realism on the dial. The muscular silhouette of the animal, with its characteristic curved horns, strong muzzle and mighty chest, is drawn in 18-karat rose gold and then applied to the dial. Diamonds play a principal role in the composition, and Harry Winston’s gem-setters have highlighted the horns and animated the ox’s body with touches of light.
The hours and minutes are excentered and placed just below the large emerald-cut diamond at 12 o’clock; a direct reference to Winston’s favourite diamond cut. The chapter ring framing the ox is also set with diamonds and punctuated with two brilliant-cut diamond indexes, and four applied rose gold hour markers.
In addition to Harry Winston’s signature diamonds, timepieces in the Premier collection are acclaimed for their mother-of-pearl dials. The dynamic red mother-of-pearl dial and the contrasting white mother-of-pearl details of the ox, add a soft, glowing dimension to the timepiece. Thanks to its natural iridescence, the mother-of-pearl changes mood depending on the ambient light.
In homage to Chinese artistic traditions, the undulating mountainous shapes in the lower half of the dial evoke the natural landscapes of traditional Chinese painting.
A PREMIER CASE
A sophisticated 36mm Premier case in 18-karat rose gold set with 57 brilliant-cut diamond houses this compelling tribute to the Year of the Ox. A sapphire crystal on the reverse side reveals the high-end Swiss-made mechanical automatic movement. Fitted with a flat silicon balance spring to ensure precision over the years, the movement offers a robust power reserve of 68 hours. The rose gold skeletonised rotor, Côtes de Genève decoration, rhodium-plated parts, and circular graining on the base plate can also be admired along with the number of each limited edition engraved on the caseback.
The timepiece comes on a shiny red alligator leather strap to match the dial and is secured to the wrist with a rose gold ardillon buckle set with 17 brilliant-cut diamonds. The Premier Chinese New Year Ox Automatic 36mm is presented in a dedicated red-lacquered gift box with golden serigraphy.
