American astronaut Buzz Aldrin is designing a Mars watch for Swiss luxury watchmaker Omega, according to a news report.
The online watch magazine Hodinkee reported that the Apollo 11 astronaut - the second person walk on the moon back in July 1969 - had tweeted last night that he was designing the watch for Omega, and speculated that the new watch would be a “next-generation Speedmaster”.
The tweet reads “I've begun my design of a #Mars watch for @omegawatches. #GYATM #NoDreamIsTooHigh.”
It shows images of Aldrin - one of him designing a watch, and another of him with an Omega official at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Aldrin is among the many high-profile celebrities and VIPs attending the Games, at which Omega is the official timekeeper.
Omega already has a proud place in the history of space exploration.
Omega’s Speedmaster Professional Chronograph is as the only piece of equipment used in all of Nasa’s piloted space missions from Gemini to the current International Space Station programme.
When Aldrin stepped on the lunar surface in 1969, he famously wore a Speedmaster Professional, which came to be known as the Moonwatch ever since.
Will the watch go to Mars? Watch this space...
